Teenager Janaki finds herself torn between the love for her mother and her overwhelming fear of loss, as she navigates a world shaped by her mother's struggles. Amidst the limitations of youth in a society governed by adults, Janaki confronts the harsh realities of gender discrimination, superstitions, and taboos surrounding menstruation and the afterlife in contemporary India. Through the lens of a profound mother-daughter bond, the film explores the resilience needed to honour a deeply personal promise, shedding light on the emotional complexities of growing up in this coming-of-age tale.

ಹದಿಹರೆಯದ ಯುವತಿ ಜಾನಕಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಅವಳ ತಾಯಿಯ ಅನುಬಂಧ. ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಮೂಲಕವೇ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಂಡ ನಷ್ಟ ಮತ್ತು ಭಯಗಳಿಂದ ಸಮ್ಮಿಶ್ರಗೊಂಡ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಿಂದ ಜಾನಕಿ ಗೊಂದಲದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಹಿರಿಯರಿಂದ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಈ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಯಸ್ಕರ ಮಿತಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಅರಿವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಲಿಂಗತಾರತಮ್ಯ, ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳು, ಮುಟ್ಟಿನ ಸಂದರ್ಭದ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳು, ಮೊದಲಾದ ಕಠೋರ ವಾಸ್ತವಿಕತೆಗಳು ಜಾನಕಿಯನ್ನು ಕಾಡತೊಡಗುತ್ತವೆ. ತಾಯಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಗಳ ಬಂಧದ ಮೂಲಕ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಗೌರವಿಸುವ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮತೆ ಇದ್ದು, ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣತೆಗಳು ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ.

Indu Lakshmi is a writer and filmmaker from India, now settled in Germany. Her debut feature film NILA was produced by the government of Kerala after she won a state level competition for the script. She wrote the screenplay for the acclaimed film, DAAYAM that premiered at MAMI FF . APPURAM (The Other Side) is her second feature film.
